The use of open source (GPL) CFD tools as OpenFOAM, familiar in the academic environment were it is used in several applications and research, has proven to be an excellent tool for gas detection studies in industrial plants. Allied to mesh generation and visualizer tools also open source software as Gmsh and Paraview, has allowed their use and customization for different applications.
Since the CFD studies of gas dispersion, dispersion of pollutants or particulates, combustion and radiation studies, different multiphase analyzes and until explosions analysis, OpenFOAM it has become an excellent tool without extracost of licenses, sometimes very expensive, that CFD commercial softwares demand, reducing competitiveness.
